If you own a car you are probably considering purchasing some kind of car insurance, and in some cases a finance company will insist on your new vehicle being comprehensively insured. But even if that choice is taken out of your hands there are still many options to consider and it can be hard to work out which is the best insurance policy for your needs.
So where do you start? It can be helpful to start not with what policies are available, but rather with what your actual requirements are. You can do this by posing a series of questions and recording your answers. Try these to get you started:
Q. Why do I need car insurance?
A. Think about the main reason for needing car insurance. Is it to simply replace the vehicle if it is stolen or severely damaged or to have minor damage covered as well? Do you want damaged just done by you covered or by other people? Do you need cover for damage you do to other people and their property while in your car? Perhaps you simply need an add-on to an existing policy?
Q. What special options will I need?
A. You might require additional coverage just to meet what the state, province or region requires. Perhaps you have some conditions or concerns that may require you to have additional coverage.
Q. Will there be young drivers, first time drivers or student drivers on the policy?
A. These drivers can affect the costof the policy as well as the terms of the policy under certain conditions.
Q. How old is the car and do I need full insurance?
A. Many older vehicles will not require complete policies, and may be eligible for reduced cost policies. If you are buying your car through a finance company, full insurance may be compulsory.
Q. What can I afford to pay for insurance?
A. It is important to consider any financial restrictions that may impact on your premiums. Although it might seem that you're making a saving by taking out a less expensive insurance premium, it could cost you a lot more in the long run.
Q. How do I want to pay premiums, monthly, quarterly or yearly?
A. Some companies offer monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly (bi-annual) or yearly payment options, most with discounts for paying in advance. You can also save if you choose to pay through your bank, as opposed to monthly invoices at a local insurance broker.
Q. Do I already have insurance?
A. In some places simply registering the car gives you some cover if you do damage to other people's property or persons. Insurance can also be included when you buy a car from certain dealers or take out finance from certain lenders.
Q. Have I ever had car insurance before?
A. Consider problems you may have with previous policies you've taken out. Some policies can be hard to claim on with a lot of fine print. If you've made claims on a policy before it may affect conditions or the price of any new policy you take out.
Tip: Review the entire document before signing the contract and ask any additional questions that may come up. Make sure the policy you are purchasing meets all the requirements you may have as well as the requirements of any lien holders on the vehicle.
