If you are female or an older motorist, you probably think you deserve to be rewarded for your reputation as a safe driver. However, if you believe the promises made by specialist insurers to provide cheap car insurance you could be paying over the odds.
It's easy to be convinced by television advertisements produced by car insurance companies claiming to provide specialist cover that's right for you. However, a survey from a price comparison website has revealed that specialists are often beaten on price.
For the female market there are a host of specialist car insurers including Ladybird, Sheila's Wheels and Diamond. Yet a 30-year-old woman driving a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or Renault Megane will find that the female-only specialists produce quotes that are, on average, 55 per cent higher than traditional insurers.
Diamond in particular offered an expensive quote at 301 a year - 73 per cent more than the cheapest deal available at 174.
The same can be said for older drivers too, who are catered for by insurers such as Saga and RIAS. A 60-year-old driving a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or Renault Megane could actually pick up an annual quote as low as 88 - yet they would be paying a whopping 255 a year through RIAS.
Many of the specialist insurers do provide unique premium options, such as handbag cover, that cater for their group. In some cases they will be the cheapest too - but the key for drivers is to not assume they always offer the lowest quotes.
Instead drivers of both genders and any age group should use a comparison tool to search for cheap car insurance and pick up quotes from dozens of car insurance providers - giving them a more thorough perspective of the market. Search by vehicle manufacturer, such as Ford car insurance to find the cheapest deals.
