It used to be the day of rest, but as Britain's love affair with the car continues, there's no respite on the UK's roads - not even on Sundays.
Statistics from a car insurance comparison website reveal that nearly two thirds of people in the UK drive up to 20 miles on Sunday - while a mere 14 percent prefer to stay at home. Unfortunately this urge to drive has repercussions with a rise in the number of accidents on the Sabbath bumping up car insurance premiums, particularly in larger cities.
The research shows that it is drivers who live in the most populated urban areas that are most likely to get behind the wheel and drive to a more rural escape. More than two thirds of Sheffield drivers (69 per cent) head to the hills on a Sunday while drivers in Belfast are the most likely to look for an escape from the capital with 85 percent driving up to twenty minutes and no drivers staying put.
With so many cars on the road it places renewed pressures on drivers who could be involved in an accident or suffer a driving conviction that could increase their car insurance premiums.
That is why motorists are being urged to think ahead on Sundays. Planning a journey to avoid traffic hotspots is important, as is sticking to roads you're familiar with so you're less likely to be taken by surprise.
It's also a good idea to pick up a weather report before you travel to determine if your journey is worthwhile. Always allow plenty of time too so you're not tempted to speed or rush into rash driving decisions.
